Don't worry so much about trying to develop compassion and kindness. Those qualities come of their own, naturally and with full force, with the recognition of your natural state. You are putting the cart before the horse when you attempt to use compassion and selflessness to "arrive" at Truth.
*****
When it comes to self-knowledge, there is no need to "enter into your feelings" or to engage in a detailed investigation of your "belief structure." Those endeavors are a complete waste of time. This is not to say that psychological issues don't exist or that there is no need for marvelously trained health professionals to treat people with certain disorders. We are merely pointing out that nonduality centers around recognizing the felt immeasurableness within which thoughts, emotions, and consciousness appear.
*****
Don't get caught up in the "witnessing position." If you do, you can easily remain there for the rest of your days. And it will all be for naught; for the witness that you are attempting to utilize is only an apparent one, a phantom that isn't able to help you to see anything. Further, witnessing is already being done by awareness, which is your true and limitless Self.
*****
You struggle to "attain" awareness when, in actuality, there is no way out of it.
*****
How can there be "steps" and practices to what you already are? Take a moment to see and feel the significance of that question. What is it, right now, that is subtly (yet fully) present and that does not change?
*****
One of your problems is that you are looking for a state that is blissful. And you will no doubt find it if you search, struggle, and sacrifice long enough. But such experiences won't last. Why? Because your real nature is peace and spaciousness, which are eternal and do not disappoint.
*****
You are that Ultimate Oneness at this very second. Consciousness, the world, the colossal oceans, and all the universe are effortlessly contained within you--again, at this very moment. We are not philosophizing here or proposing psychological theories or prophesying--just pointing to a simple and very evident truth.
*****
Right here and now, you are your own dharma, your own "right path." Nothing is needed except a clear and immediate seeing that you are That, awareness itself. You are simply being led by your mind and your imagination when you attempt to search for truth through spiritual journeys, prolonged concentration, and ascetic practices. You are your own dharma, you own "right path." Stay with the beauty of your natural and eternal presence. And what could be more effortless than that?

"Your book is a gentle guide to the vastness that is you." -- Dr. Joe Vitale, a star in the hit movie "The Secret" and author of The Awakening Course
~~~~~
"Loved the book, Rodney. Enjoyed it as much as John Wheeler's first book, Awakening to the Natural State. My favourite quote of yours was "you are no more your personal history than you are your toothbrush." I like the fact that you included little tidbits of your life and surrounds. It felt more like reading a book on travel or history than some of the other textbook style books on nonduality. I think for anyone serious about a direct approach, your book and John Wheeler's are the two to have." -- Ian
A Vastness All Around: Awakening to Your Natural State is Rodney's first collection of essays, discussions, interviews, and powerful pointers. It can be ordered directly from the publisher at Lulu Press.
If you would like to meet Rodney, have him to discuss nonduality, sign books, or read, you can email him at: writerguy@fastmail.fm. Such events are self-organized, so funding is key, with groups and universities that can cover travel expenses getting priority. And much appreciation!
Hey Rodney, just checking in, and LOVE the first "awareness" pointer.
Hi Suzanne,
It's great to hear from you! Thanks for your comment. I'm rather partial to that pointer myself. :)
